From Burnout to Breakthrough: The Journey Behind SC Inspire Tuition

Hi everyone, Sean here from SC Inspire Tuition.

Welcome to our very first blog post! I thought it would be useful to begin by sharing a bit about myself and the journey that brought me here.

I was a teacher for over 10 years, including four years working abroad. Teaching gave me countless rewarding experiences, but eventually, I felt like I had hit a wall. I was burnt out. The job had taken over my life—physically, emotionally, and mentally. I carried the work home with me every day, often glued to my laptop until 11 p.m. or later. It became difficult to switch off, and slowly, it started to impact my personal and family relationships.

Thinking Outside the Box

After reaching that breaking point, I found myself searching for a different path. I needed something that gave me the freedom to make my own choices, while still allowing me to use the experience and passion I’d built over the years. I still loved teaching—but it just wasn't working for me on an emotional level anymore.

Then I came across a video on YouTube called The Pit Pony, and it was genuinely life-changing. It opened my eyes to the possibility of working differently—on my own terms, in a way that could still be meaningful and impactful, but far more sustainable. Tutoring became the alternative I was desperately seeking. It allowed me to take everything I’d learned in the classroom and channel it into something new—something that reignited my sense of purpose.

The Birth of SC Inspire Tuition

In July 2023, I completed a six-month teaching contract—and made the decision not to apply for the permanent role. Suddenly, I found myself unemployed, with a house and children to support. It was scary—very scary. But it was also a time of hope and possibility.

That summer was a turning point. I reached out to some amazing people in the tutoring world, and they were incredibly kind and generous with their support. In particular, I want to thank Su Bowie from Easy as Pi Maths Tuition, who offered so much advice and encouragement in those early days. I genuinely couldn’t have done it without her. Later, Chrissi Berry from CB Tutoring played a huge role in helping me grow—taking me on as a tutor, expanding my network, and empowering me to teach new subjects like KS3 English. These two women were absolutely instrumental in helping me get off the ground, and I’ll always be grateful.

Since those early days, I’ve grown in confidence and connections. My first year of tutoring involved working with agencies and building a small amount of independent work under my own business. But by late 2024—year two—I decided it was time to really go for it. That’s when I fully launched SC Inspire Tuition, began advertising more regularly, and started growing home education groups.

Now, in April 2025, I’m proud to say we have four fantastic tutors on board, and we teach 17 weekly classes for home-educated families! Alongside that, our 1:1 tutoring continues to grow, supporting children and families on their learning journeys in a positive, flexible, and meaningful way.
